It is hard to keep track of everything happening between family cookouts and running errands. If you were too busy staying cool or prepping the grill to catch up on local news, don’t worry. Here is a quick wrap-up of the biggest events and updates you might have missed around town.

The Quick List: What You Can’t Miss

$800,000 Boosts Carlisle’s Favorite Hangouts

On June 29, the Cumberland Area Economic Development Corporation handed out nearly $800,000 in tourism grants, making Carlisle a big winner. The Carlisle Family YMCA scored $500,000 to upgrade its aquatic center so it can host huge youth and college swim meets. The historic Carlisle Theatre got over $115,000 for acoustic sound panels to attract bigger touring acts to our town. Finally, the Carlisle Sports Emporium snagged nearly $100,000 for new kitchen gear, including a pizza oven to serve better food.

Triple-Digit Heat Meets Summerfair

Carlisle pushed through a dangerous heat wave last week, with temperatures hitting a scorching 103.2°F on Thursday, July 2. While the extreme heat caused a few cancellations, like a youth pickleball class, the 49th annual Carlisle Summerfair still shined. Folks cooled off with free open pool nights at the Boiling Springs Pool and the Carlisle Community Pool. The week also featured the Carlisle State Fair at the Fairgrounds, giving residents plenty of traditional fair food and carnival rides despite the sweltering weather.

It was a patriotic week, kicking off with the free “Stars Burst Over Carlisle” fireworks show at the Fairgrounds on Friday, July 3. Gates opened at 7:00 PM with a live DJ, leading up to the 9:30 PM show. The fun spilled over into Saturday morning at Children’s Lake in Boiling Springs with the “Anything Floats” race. Locals raced wild handmade watercrafts held together by tape and luck, with craft inspection starting at 9:00 AM and races at 11:00 AM.

Stepping Back in Time

History fans had a big reason to celebrate on June 30 when the new Patriots’ Path Revolutionary War Trail officially launched. Created by the Historical Society, the Army Heritage Center Foundation, and Visit Cumberland Valley, it features new signs guiding you through our local history. For even more history, the Historical Society hosted a “Tavern Talk” on July 3 with actors playing George Washington and Patrick Henry, plus special guest General (Ret) James Dubik.

Speedy Babies and Track Stars

If you wanted to see some speed, Ken Millen Field at Carlisle High School was the place to be on June 30. Starting at 6:00 PM, kids competed in the Jim Thorpe Track & Field Meet. The real stars were the little ones during the Baby Races at 6:30 PM, an event sponsored by UPMC and Magee Women’s Hospital for crawling babies under one year old.

Designed by Patrol Officer Landen Smith, the custom patch honors the United States’ 250th anniversary, and officers will be wearing it proudly all year.

Borough Meetings Paused While Schools Prepared

With the heat wave and the July 4th holiday, local government took a well-deserved breather. The Carlisle Borough Council canceled its July 1 workshop, the Zoning Hearing Board canceled its Thursday meeting, and Borough Hall locked its doors on Friday. Meanwhile, the Carlisle Area School District stayed busy, holding a board committee meeting on July 2 and dropping an updated FAQ on June 29 about the upcoming Mooreland Elementary School renovations.

Symphony Finale Wraps Up the Week

We wrapped up this wild week of community spirit with the Harrisburg Symphony on July 5 at 8:00 PM. Attendees had to double-check their maps, as the concert location was changed. It was held at the ATS Auditorium at 360 West Louther Street on the Dickinson College campus.

Looking Ahead

From nearly a million dollars pumping into our local economy to beating the heat during Summerfair, Carlisle proved once again how resilient and vibrant our community is. As we recover from the holiday excitement, we can look forward to seeing our favorite local spots get major upgrades. Stay cool out there, and we’ll see you next week!
