Truck Heaven at the Fairgrounds

From August 7 to August 9, the Carlisle Truck Nationals packed the fairgrounds with over 2,700 trucks, custom vans, and historic fire engines, making it the fastest-growing local event over the last five years. The event featured a patriotic Americana display honoring America’s 250th anniversary, along with the quirky “Old Fire Farts” display. Families enjoyed loud, car-crushing performances from the Raminator and Ramdemption monster trucks, plus a glowing Big Rig Glow Show on Saturday night. However, the high-flying stunts came with high-decibel sensory warnings, and organizers urged attendees to bring ear protection.

Flobird is Out, ParkMobile is In

If you park in downtown Carlisle, you’ll need to download a new app before the month ends. On August 7, the Borough announced a transition to the ParkMobile app, which will be the exclusive digital parking payment option starting August 31. The town is replacing older single-space smart meters with centralized Pay-by-Plate solar kiosks and long-term “gold meters”. While combining vendors helps lower long-term maintenance costs for the town, it does shift transaction fees directly onto drivers, though you can still pay with coins or credit cards at the kiosks.

From Toxic Factory to Thriving Hub

On August 7, state and local leaders celebrated the rebirth of a 63-acre brownfield site that once housed heavy industrial factories for Masland/IAC, Carlisle Tire and Wheel, and Tyco. The site was left with deep soil and groundwater contamination before a massive 10-alarm fire gutted it in 2010. Thanks to a one-time $20 million state budget transfer under the Hazardous Sites Cleanup Act, this vacant eyesore has been cleaned up. It is now officially transformed into a mixed-use space featuring housing, retail, a hotel, and green space.

Crowds Delay Data Center Votes

Local supervisors had to pause a highly anticipated public hearing regarding data center zoning rules on August 5. So many concerned residents showed up that the crowd quickly exceeded the meeting room’s 150-person capacity, forcing officials to postpone the session by two weeks. Citizens are voicing serious concerns about how data centers might impact the town. They are worried about grid strain, water pollution, loud cooling fans, and diesel emissions from emergency backup generators.

Schools Get High-Tech and Update Staff

The Big Spring School District is stepping into the digital age by adding forward-thinking courses like “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence” and “Video Game Music and Interactive Sound Design”. On the financial side, the School Board approved more than $3.9 million in payments across the General and Cafeteria funds. The district is also going through a staffing transition. While they welcomed Owen Lehman, a local high school student hired as a Business Office intern, the board also accepted a high volume of resignations from Special Education Teachers and Paraprofessionals.

Safety and Fun at National Night Out

The Carlisle Expo Center was packed with families on Tuesday, August 4, for the annual National Night Out. Hosted by the Carlisle Borough and North Middleton Township Police Departments, the free evening brought neighbors and first responders together to build stronger connections. Kids had the chance to check out emergency vehicles and meet local police dogs. Attendees also got to watch live forensics demonstrations led by the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Forensic Investigation Division.
