Review of a Slice of Pizza at George’s Subs and Pizza in Carlisle, PA

The Mission
I tried a slice of plain cheese pizza at every traditional pizza shop the Carlisle, Pennsylvania on a mission to find the best slice of pizza in Carlisle. I could eat pizza almost every meal of the day, it’s definitely one of my top favorite foods without question. And when I get pizza, I usually just get a few plain cheese slices from a traditional pizza shop nearby. Nothing fancy. But I am a bit picky about my slices. And since I live in Carlisle now, so I gotta know where the best slice is! Here’s my review of a slice from George’s Subs & Pizza…

Even Playing Field
I made sure to visit each pizza shop either around 12:00PM noon or around 5:00PM/6:00PM when they should have a good fresh slice pie ready that hasn’t been sitting around for a while. This puts them on even playing fields and gives them the best shot at giving me a good representation of their slices. It also gives me the opportunity to see how the service is when they are a bit more busy. And I do not let them know I am doing a review, so they are not doing anything special or better because of that.
My Bias
Full disclosure, I’m a sauce guy. I need enough sauce and it needs to have some tang and/or sweetness and good flavor, or I won’t like it. And I don’t like a crazy amount of cheese, so places that make slices like that, immediately have a disadvantage in my ratings. If you like tons of cheese and don’t care about the sauce, then you could probably go by the opposite of my ratings.

Notes
- Price Per Slice (including tax): $3.18 (but I paid $2.12 because they run a $2 Tuesday Special on slices)
- Day of the Week: Tuesday
- Time: 11:59AM – medium busy – 4 ground dining in – more than most other places had – and more came and went while I was there eating
- Order: 1 slice of plain cheese pizza
- Wait time after ordering: 3 min 24 sec – immediately ordering upon entry and normal acceptable wait time.
- Dining room: Nice, new, clean. Redone since last time I was there, or maybe they moved locations altogerher? If im remembering correctly, it used to be really small, but now normal pizza shop size. Music playing and felt alive. Seating: 3 booths of 4 seats each, 4 tables that seat a total of 14, 2 bars at front windows that seat 2 and 3. Seats 31 total seating.
- Parking: Metered/Paid On Street Parking (located in downtown Carlisle retail area)
- Fixins (parmesan, oregano, and red pepper) on each table which not all pizza shops have.
Rating
on a scale of 1 to 10
- Cheese: 7 – Average – Slightly more browned than other places. Maybe because of the oven they use or something?
- Sauce: 10 – Well Above Average/Best – Tangy and more flavor than most others I tasted. (maybe 10 best i tasted)
- Sauce to Cheese Ratio: 8 – Slightly Above Average – A little more than others. Could use slightly more for my personal taste, but better than most.
- Crust: 10 – Well Above Average/Best – Lightly buttered on the bottom. And there’s light parmesan or something on the end crust. Definitely different and more effort put into this crust than most other places. My only critique would be that I’d like a little bigger end crust. But great! They describe it as “Original Pan is a slightly thicker dough with a buttery, crisp crust and crushed tomato sauce. Traditional “NY Style” is a thinner Neapolitan-style dough with a smooth and slightly sweeter sauce.”
- Size: 7 – Average – Average dimensions, but a little thicker and more substantial
- Service: 8 – Slightly Above Average – Quick ordering and heating up of slice, plus they brought the slice to my table (many just call “1 slice” and you go up and get it).
- Facility: 8 – Slightly Above Average – Nicer and newer than most and had music playing and had fixins on each table.
- Total: 58 (out of a possible 70) = 8.3 stars (out of a possible 10)
- Slice Only Total: 42 (out of a possible 50) = 8.4 stars (out of a possible 10)
- Value: $3.18 per slice / 8.3 stars = $0.38 per star
- Slice Only Value: $3.18 per slice / 8.4 stars = $0.38 per star
