Last Week in Carlisle, PA | May 18 through 24, 2026 | Tactical Takedowns, Smashed State Records, & The Great Dog Escape
Ever feel like life in our borough moves a bit too slow? You might want to think again. Last week, Carlisle was packed with everything from history-making student achievements to intense police action. If you were busy working or just enjoying the nice spring weather, it was easy to miss some major news.
At a Glance: Last Week’s Top Takeaways
Here is a quick look at the biggest things that happened around town between May 18 and May 24, 2026:
- Local schools kicked off a busy spring concert season.
- Thundering Herd athletes shattered decades-old records at the State Championships.
- Fast police action ended a scary armed robbery downtown.
- A unique local history exhibit gained regional attention.
- Two runaway dogs were safely returned to their owner.
Local Students Fill the Air with Spring Music
Our younger students worked incredibly hard on their music all year, and we finally got to hear them shine. On May 18, kids from Crestview, Hamilton, and Bellaire held their big spring concert at the high school. The next night, students from LeTort, Mt. Holly Springs, North Dickinson, and Mooreland took the stage, followed by a fantastic show from Lamberton Middle School on May 20. It was a wonderful showcase of local talent that made the whole community proud.
Track and Field Stars Crush State Records

Our high school athletes brought serious heat to the PIAA State Championships at Shippensburg University on May 22 and May 23. Senior Drew Hopper wrapped up his high school career by placing 8th in the state for discus and shattering a school javelin record from 1988 with a massive 191-foot, 6-inch throw. At the same time, Ana Bondy set a brand new school record in the mile run with a lightning-fast time of 4:50.28, earning herself a 3rd place state medal.
Tactical Police Action Ends Armed Robbery Quickly
Things took a scary turn on Sunday evening, May 24, at the Carroll Mart on North Hanover Street. Around 6:48 p.m., two people were robbed at gunpoint before the suspects fled to a home on North Bedford Street. The Carlisle Police and the Cumberland County Special Response Team moved incredibly fast. By 10:00 p.m., they used a search warrant to safely arrest the suspects, Corey Heffren and Christopher Sheibley, bringing a quick end to a dangerous situation.
Downtown Exhibit Puts Local History in the Spotlight
An eye-opening exhibit right in the heart of downtown Carlisle made regional waves last week. On May 20, WITF’s radio show “The Spark” highlighted the display, which is titled “Freedom to Be: LGBTQ+ Journeys in the American Story”. You can visit it for free at the History on High Museum Shop at 33 West High Street. It uses personal stories and historical items to share 250 years of identity and resilience right here in Central Pennsylvania.
Runaway Pups Reunited Safely with Owner

We also have a great happy ending to share about some local pets. On Saturday morning, May 23, two friendly dogs managed to escape their yard and were found roaming around the borough, which created a bit of a traffic hazard. Local neighbors and the Carlisle Police Department moved quickly after a public alert went out. By 11:25 a.m. that same morning, the furry adventurers were caught and safely returned to their relieved owner.
Conclusion: A Look Ahead
Last week showed exactly how lively and active our community can be, balancing proud school milestones with fast-acting local emergency responses. We saw amazing talent from our student musicians and track stars, a successful rescue of some local pets, and a deep look into our regional history. Looking forward, make sure to head outside to see our Marching Band play in the upcoming Memorial Day Parade on May 25, 2026. (UPDATE AFTER THE FACT: The Memorial Day Parade was canceled and instead there was a program inside, and then the procession and gun solute outside in the square afterwards.)
