It was a week that felt like a month for those of us living in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. From a heartbreaking fire on Lincoln Street to a massive community walk for the homeless, our town stayed very busy. We saw local students showing off world-class art, Dickinson athletes crushing it on the field, and even some simple trash delays that had everyone talking. If you missed anything between Monday, February 23, and Sunday, March 1, 2026, here is a quick summary list of the biggest things that happened in our town:
- Tragedy on Lincoln Street: A deadly late-night house fire required a massive emergency response and displaced several neighbors.
- Winter Weather & Heroes: Snow caused delays for the Carlisle Barracks and trash pickups, while a local 911 dispatcher was honored for a heroic roadside baby delivery.
- Frog Switch Demolition: Major progress was made on the 125-year-old factory site on High Street to make room for a new community space.
- Real Estate Market Update: Seven homes officially closed in the Carlisle Area School District with houses selling in just a few days.
- Dickinson Sports Wins: Both the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams at Dickinson College celebrated huge home victories.
- Arts & Education: Local students displayed their art at CALC, while others enjoyed a Dickinson musical and a panel on Artificial Intelligence.
- Community & Governance: Neighbors walked to support the homeless, while local boards met to plan the future of our borough.
A Heartbreaking Fire on Lincoln Street

Our hearts are heavy this week as we process a tragic fire that happened on the 200 block of Lincoln Street near Factory Street. The blaze broke out late Thursday night, February 26, at a duplex, and first responders arrived just before midnight to find the second floor covered in heavy flames. Sadly, one woman lost her life in the fire, and another person was taken to the hospital for injuries. Because the damage was so intense, the American Red Cross stepped in on Friday to help seven of our neighbors who lost their homes with emergency support and a place to stay. While the official cause is still being investigated, authorities mentioned that a smoking-related incident could not be ruled out.
Winter Weather Delays and a “Stork Club” Hero
The winter weather continued to affect our daily lives this past week with snow and ice causing several local delays. The Carlisle Barracks delayed their opening until 11:00 a.m. on Monday, and our local trash and recycling pick-ups were pushed back by one full day for the entire week. However, the cold weather also brought a touching moment when Cumberland County Commissioners honored 911 dispatcher Eric Harne on February 26. During a bad snowstorm earlier this year, Eric stayed on the phone to help a caller successfully deliver a baby girl on the side of York Road. This amazing act made him a member of the “Stork Club”, a special group of dispatchers who have helped deliver babies over the phone.
Historic Frog Switch Factory Demolition Moves Forward
Our town is seeing some big physical changes at the 125-year-old Frog, Switch & Manufacturing Company site on High Street. This massive 26-acre property was used for industrial work for nearly two centuries but recently closed down. Recently, the Carlisle Board of Appeals approved a demolition permit for the old foundry buildings, reversing an earlier decision. This allows the Real Estate Collaborative to move forward with cleaning up the site using a $10.2 million state grant and loan package. The goal is to turn this huge, unused space into a brand-new mixed-use area, which is a big step in changing the eastern gateway into our hometown.

Dickinson College Lacrosse Teams Dominate at Home
Saturday, February 28, was a huge day for sports fans at Dickinson College right here in Carlisle. Both the men’s and women’s lacrosse teams had major victories at Biddle Field. The 12th-ranked Dickinson men’s team beat Roanoke College 16-9, led by Preston Boyd and Landen Hyatt who combined for nine goals. The Dickinson women’s team also crushed their competition, defeating DeSales University with a final score of 15-5. Eva Gardner led the women’s team with four goals, while Grace Kelly provided six assists to help secure the comfortable win. It was an awesome week for our local student-athletes to show off their hard work.
Local Students and Theater Bring Arts to Life
Our community’s creative spirit was on full display last week through several local events. On February 26, the Carlisle Arts Learning Center (CALC) opened a new exhibit featuring art from K-12 students across the school district. At the same time, theater fans enjoyed a magical production of “Into the Woods” put on by Dickinson College’s Department of Theatre and Dance at the Mathers Theatre. For those interested in technology, the Clarke Forum hosted a panel discussion on February 26 about the real-world impacts of Artificial Intelligence on healthcare and the environment. Additionally, the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center held its annual Reenactor Recruitment Day, where over 100 experts displayed history from every era of the U.S. Army.
Walking Together and Planning for Our Future

Last week also showed how much we care about our neighbors and the future of our borough. On Saturday, February 28, many residents participated in the Coldest Night of the Year walk to raise money for local charities helping those dealing with hunger and homelessness. While we walked together in the cold, our local government was also busy at work. On February 23, both the Carlisle Borough Planning Commission and the Carlisle Area School Board held meetings to discuss new development projects and district plans. These meetings help ensure our town keeps moving forward by handling the details that affect our taxes and property values.
Keeping Our Neighborhoods Safe and Informed
The Carlisle Police Department had a busy week with several reports showing they are staying active to handle issues as they come up. On February 24, an arrest was made on Factory Street after a disturbance, and later in the week, police handled a retail theft case on Noble Boulevard. They also issued a warrant for a trespassing incident at the Giant on South Spring Garden Street. Beyond public safety, we also took time to remember long-time residents we lost last week, including Robert A. “Bob” Rothermel, Mary Jane Erby, James William Smith Jr., Alice Gurklies, and Caroline M. Makibbin. These individuals were part of the fabric of our community, and we send our thoughts to their grieving families.
Conclusion: A Week of Strength and Spirit in Carlisle
Looking back, the week of February 23 through March 1, 2026, was definitely a memorable and busy one for us in Carlisle. Our community showed its strength by coming together in the face of both challenges and celebrations.
