Arrest Made in 2015 Homicide Case

Justice took a big step forward after a decade of waiting. The Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office unsealed an arrest warrant on June 14 for 60-year-old Betty Jane Adams. She faces first-degree and third-degree murder charges for the 2015 shooting death of 68-year-old John Wesley Alleman in his Middlesex Township home. Adams lived with Alleman for ten years and originally claimed he shot at her before turning the gun on himself. However, police used new forensic reconstruction and ballistics evidence to disprove her story. Adams was arrested in South Carolina back in May, but officials kept the news quiet until last week.

The Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals delivered a powerful ruling regarding the old Carlisle Indian Industrial School cemetery. The court decided that a federal grave protection law called NAGPRA applies to the children buried there. This historic ruling allows the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska to finally bring home the remains of Samuel Gilbert and Edward Hensley. Both boys died at the school more than 125 years ago. Advocates say this decision fixes historic wrongs and ensures federal agencies respect tribal sovereignty so these children can receive traditional burials on their own lands.

Residents Pack Theater for AI Data Center Town Hall

On Thursday, June 11, the Carlisle Theatre was packed for a public town hall focused on the rise of artificial intelligence. The event was organized by the Stewards of Cumberland County and followed a regional meeting in Harrisburg on June 10. An independent panel of experts answered questions about how massive data centers could impact our local water supply, electrical grid, and zoning laws. No representatives from the actual tech projects were on the panel to ensure the conversation stayed completely neutral and factual.

Camp Thompson Celebrates a Century of Summer Camp

A beloved local institution just reached an amazing milestone. On Saturday, June 13, the Carlisle Family YMCA celebrated Camp Thompson’s 100th anniversary down at Pine Grove Furnace State Park on Pine Grove Road. The camp has been serving local youth since 1926. The centennial celebration included classic camp activities like archery, tours, and a traditional campfire. The event also kicked off a brand new fundraising campaign to make sure the camp stays strong for the next century.

Carlisle’s largest yard sale returned on Saturday, June 13, at Building T within the local fairgrounds. The U-Turn Community Yard Sale is a massive recycling effort run by the United Way and Dickinson College. Volunteers spent the week unloading two tractor-trailers full of clothes, books, and furniture left behind by departing college students. Shoppers entered at K Street to buy the gently used items, keeping tons of trash out of local landfills. All the money raised goes right back into funding health and human service programs across Cumberland County.

Family Members Charged in Child Abuse Investigation

Four family members living in the 100 block of North East Street were charged last week following a serious investigation. The situation came to light after a school nurse at Letort Elementary noticed injuries on a student and spoke up. The Carlisle Police and Cumberland County Children and Youth Services worked together to uncover a very bad situation inside the home. Officials expressed deep gratitude to the school nurse for looking out for our local kids.

Hanover Street Reopening and New Traffic Delays

If you’re tired of sitting in traffic on Hanover Street, there’s some good news. The intersection of North Hanover Street and Carlisle Springs Road is scheduled to reopen by June 17 as the Connectivity Project finishes up this phase of construction. However, you’ll still want to leave early for your morning commute. Starting June 15, UGI utility crews are moving their street work over to parts of C Street and Franklin Street, which will likely cause new delays in the northwest part of the borough.
