Review of a Slice of Pizza at Vinny Restaurant Pizza & Subs in Carlisle, PA

The Mission

I tried a slice of plain cheese pizza at every traditional pizza shop the Carlisle, Pennsylvania on a mission to find the best slice of pizza in Carlisle. I could eat pizza almost every meal of the day, it’s definitely one of my top favorite foods without question. And when I get pizza, I usually just get a few plain cheese slices from a traditional pizza shop nearby. Nothing fancy. But I am a bit picky about my slices. And since I live in Carlisle now, so I gotta know where the best slice is! Here’s my review of a slice from Vinny Restaurant Pizza & Subs…

Even Playing Field

I made sure to visit each pizza shop either around 12:00PM noon or around 5:00PM/6:00PM when they should have a good fresh slice pie ready that hasn’t been sitting around for a while. This puts them on even playing fields and gives them the best shot at giving me a good representation of their slices. It also gives me the opportunity to see how the service is when they are a bit more busy. And I do not let them know I am doing a review, so they are not doing anything special or better because of that.

My Bias

Full disclosure, I’m a sauce guy. I need enough sauce and it needs to have some tang and/or sweetness and good flavor, or I won’t like it. And I don’t like a crazy amount of cheese, so places that make slices like that, immediately have a disadvantage in my ratings. If you like tons of cheese and don’t care about the sauce, then you could probably go by the opposite of my ratings.

Price Per Slice (including tax): $2.76
Day of the Week: Friday
Time: 5:19PM – Not very busy when I got there. More busy by the time I left around 6:00PM (because I waited forever for my slices).
Order: 2 slices of plain cheese pizza
Wait time after ordering: 15 min 53 sec – Longer than any other by far.
Dining room: Nice. Medium size. Bright. Clean. Music playing. Lots of windows.
Parking: Plenty. Free. Parking lot in front, on side, and in rear of building. Located in its own stand-alone building.
My very close 2nd place favorite for best slice of pizza in Carlisle, PA. Only gets 2nd based on the value metric, but I choose Alfredo over my 1st favorite all the time. Just costs slightly more.

Rating

on a scale of 1 to 10

Cheese: 6 – Slightly Below Average – Average, but there were two kinds on my slice for sone reason. Looked like there was the original cheese that was on the pizza, then when he went to heat it up, he noticed there wasn’t enough cheese in some spots, so he added some extra cheese in those spots. And since he told me he dropped my first two slices, it makes me wonder what was up with my slices. Not saying they gave me floor food, but why was cheese added in spots right before heating it up for me?
Sauce: 5 – Below Average – I guess, not really enough to even taste it to judge it.
Sauce to Cheese Ratio: 5 – Below Average – Hardly any sauce. None to taste, except a little near crust, but really couldn’t taste it there either.
Crust: 7 – Average – Fine, but nothing special, and thickness throughout the slice was inconsistent
Size: 7 – Average – I gave it Average, but they were slightly smaller than others I think.
Service: 5 – Below Average – Quickly greeted and order taken, but took the longest time to get the slices after ordering… just put the slices in to heat them up 8+ minutes after I ordered. (And the slices were already there, they did not have to make a new slice pie, they just forgot or decided not to put my slices in until well after I ordered. Service rating started at an 8 Slightly above average, but lost points as my wait time kept ticking. Even the time between me seeing them put the slices in the oven to when I got the slices was much longer than the total time to get my slices at all other places. When I finally got my slices, he informed me that he dropped my original slices and had to heat up new ones.
Facility: 7 – Average – Inside was slightly above average bright, clean, and one of the only ones with music playing when I went in, but outside and sign could use a little love. Not terrible outside, but a little sprucing up would be good.
Total: 42 (out of a possible 70) = 6.0 stars (out of a possible 10)
Slice Only Total: 30 (out of a possible 50) = 6.0 stars (out of a possible 10)
Value: $2.76 per slice / 6.0 stars = $0.46 per star
