Last Week in Carlisle, PA | May 25 through 31, 2026 | Big Changes, Wild Scams, and Rebuilding Frog Switch
It’s easy to miss what’s happening right in our own backyard when life gets busy. But last week in Carlisle was anything but boring. From a massive factory cleanup to a crazy scam at the local car auction, our town saw some major action between May 25 and May 31, 2026.
If you’re wondering what you missed, here’s what happened:
- Frog Switch Cleanup: A new $750,000 grant will help turn an old factory on East High Street into a spot for new homes and businesses.
- A Wild NASCAR Scam: State police arrested a man for selling a fake street-legal NASCAR truck at the car auction.
- Apartment Rebuilding: A crane is now visible as construction begins on the apartment complex destroyed by fire last year.
- Community Town Hall: Locals gathered to discuss rising energy costs and pollution.
- Robbery Arrests: Police quickly caught two armed robbery suspects hiding on North Bedford Street.
- Memorial Day Pivot: The community moved our ceremony indoors due to rain, making sure our heroes were honored.
- Rotary Club Celebration: Thirty years of downtown flower baskets were celebrated with a free ice cream social.
- School Wins & Gardens: High schoolers won sports medals, and the Dickinson College pollinator garden is in peak bloom.
$750,000 to Clean Up the Frog Switch Factory
The old Frog, Switch & Manufacturing Company site at 600 East High Street is finally getting a makeover. The state announced a $750,000 grant to help clean up this abandoned 17-acre heavy industrial site. The money will safely remove old building materials and clean the contaminated soil. Combined with a $10.2 million grant from last year, the goal is to make the land ready for a mix of new housing and commercial spaces right next to downtown.
A Fake Street-Legal NASCAR Truck
If you bought a truck at the Carlisle Car Auction recently, you might want to check what’s under the hood. State police arrested a Williamsport man on May 27 for a pretty unbelievable scam. He allegedly put a fake VIN on a retired, non-street-legal NASCAR racing truck and sold it as a 1999 Chevy S10 for $10,000. Troopers quickly realized the truck lacked basic safety features, and the seller now faces multiple felony charges.
Cranes in the Sky: Apartment Rebuilding

If you look up near South Spring Garden Street, you’ll likely spot a massive crane. That’s because construction is officially underway to replace the Residences at Seven Gables apartment building. You probably remember the devastating three-alarm fire that destroyed the complex back in February 2025. It’s been over a year of planning and cleanup, but the replacement building is finally going up. It’s a very welcome sight for our community to see this space being restored after such a large-scale emergency.
In case you missed it, here’s the fire…
Neighbors Tackle Pollution at Town Hall
On May 28, Hope Station and the Conservation Voters of Pennsylvania hosted a town hall at the Stuart Community Center. Residents gathered to discuss how high energy bills and corporate pollution create unfair burdens for local families. It gave neighbors a chance to speak directly with advocates and local leaders about finding real solutions to these everyday financial and environmental struggles.
Armed Robbery Suspects Caught
Local police had a busy start to the week following a terrifying armed robbery at the Carroll Mart on North Hanover Street on May 24. By the next day, Carlisle Police and the Cumberland County Special Response Team tracked the two suspects to a home on North Bedford Street. They executed a search warrant late at night and safely arrested both men, charging them with robbery and theft.
A Rainy Memorial Day Pivot

We didn’t let bad weather stop us from honoring fallen heroes on Memorial Day. Because of the storms, the Joint Veterans Council of Carlisle canceled the parade, but they held a beautiful stationary ceremony downtown instead. Former Mayor Kirk Wilson served as the emcee, and Navy veteran Dana Neely delivered a moving keynote speech about sacrifice.
Celebrating 30 Years of Downtown Flowers
If you love the hanging flower baskets downtown, you can thank the Rotary Club of Carlisle. They celebrated the 30th anniversary of this project on May 28 with an ice cream social at Veteran’s Square. Mayor Sean Shultz gave a special proclamation to the club to thank them for their hard work, and residents enjoyed free Bruster’s ice cream along with live music.
High School Wins and Garden Blooms
We have some great local news to share from our schools. At Carlisle High School, student-athlete Ana Bondy earned a silver medal in the 3,200-meter run, and Drew Hopper put in a stellar performance in the state discus competition. Also, if you’re looking for a peaceful walk, the pollinator garden at Dickinson College is in full bloom right now near Kaufman Hall.
Looking Ahead in Carlisle
Carlisle is clearly a town going through exciting changes, from cleaning up old factories and rebuilding lost housing to stopping unique crimes, all while keeping its strong community roots alive. As we move into June, mark your calendars for a public hearing on community funds on June 9 and a free Public Safety Day on June 26. Stay tuned for next week’s update to see what happens next in our town!
